Dokter’s Weekly Report #1

I collected more sources than I expected. Did not expect to provide 8 links and a heap of Tweets.

A mix of sexism, privacy, security and the good old media.

After the iCloud incident I was considering moving everything away from there, but that has proven to be a bit too inconvenient. Not only does iOS lack a good email client, it also lacks a good calendar that is not dependent on either the iOS calendar or Google.

It’s interesting that, the more you learn about journalism, the easier it becomes to spot those who truly are made for it. Hence the Tweet below. Of course, writing a column you have more flexibility when it comes to objectivity, but what still matters is balance. Not meaning you must have opposing sources, but variance.

I suspect next weeks report will not be this extensive. However, if you do enjoy a good read on Sunday, let me know below in the comment field and I’ll do my best to provide you with a good amount of reading once a week.

Virgin defends policy of separating men from children – Read it
By default men are presumably paedophiles until proven otherwise. A disgusting trend which will only hurt our collective fight for equality for everyone, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, etc.

Triple J and Tom Ballard apologise for holocaust ovens joke – Read it
The apology means nothing. This is something you just don’t joke about. Pathetic and makes me lose more respect in Australia media, which I thought was impossible.

Whirlpool more accurate than AFR, says Conroy – Read it
Kind of sad when a forum is considered more accurate than a reputable newspaper. Provides you with a better understanding why the media in Oz is crumbling at the moment.

NYPD Has Very Good Reason For Beating Up New York Times Photog – Read it
Don’t want the public to see how you conduct yourself as a police officer, then don’t beat up the press.

Why I Decided Against a Career in Journalism – Read it
What a trooper! Instead of getting out there, trying to make a change, he decides he’ll sit back and let someone else do it. If he ever ends up as a journo it’ll be some local tabloid rag.

Internet security – Read it
A few interesting apps for those concerned about privacy. Remember that word kids? Look it up, you might learn something, unless you find a dictionary tl;dr.

The bad and the ugly of getting hacked, not backing up – Read it
Backups are essential and should be common sense by now. However you should also be able to trust the company you hand over your data too.

Why I’ll be kicking you off this blog – Read it
Amen to that!

Banging on about passion

Why do I bang on about ‘following your passion’ and that it’s worth taking the risk? I was fed with fear to ignore my passions in life. I regret that it listened to friends, partners and family members. I don’t want other people to be discouraged to follow their passion just because someone is too scared to take the risk or failed themselves.

I’m finally following my passion – journalism. But I would’ve loved to have started my career 10+ years ago.

I also gave up on a career in electronic music, because I was told I spent too much making music. Regarding journalism, I was told there are no jobs and I would be forever poor.

Instead I was told to just get a degree in something that would guarantee instant employment and a high wage.

What a load of fucking crap! Not to mention how sad. How so low aspirations in life that you are willing to settle for the sake of safety.

Sadly I listened to these idiots.

It took over a year of unemployment– feeling that I had nothing to lose –to push me to follow my passion for journalism.

You shouldn’t do what you love because you feel you have nothing to lose. It is dangerous – because you will be willing to sacrifice anything.

I’m doing what I love now – but at what cost?
