When looking over the Power Point slides before today’s lecture I was positively surprised to see it included Hunter S Thompson. The one journalist that inspired me to pursue a career in journalism.

What was said during the lecture however disappointed me a lot. Again it was stressed how important it is to be objective and unbiased, yet the portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson was more a portrayal of the Raoul Duke myth – the main character from Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.

Raoul Duke was Hunter’s nom de plume – a myth which unfortunately took on a life of its own. A character people expected when they saw and heard about Dr. Thompson – more than the real person.
