“Have you talked with us [Jehovah's Witness] before,” which I replied, “it has been a while since last time.”
I can not for the life of me defend religion. Firstly because it has a poor track record and secondly, it assumes it trumps logic, fact and science.
So I don’t mind derision of religion, I condone it, which most of you might have noticed.
However, I didn’t slam the door in this guys face, nor did I chastise him for believing that humans have only existed for 6000 years. Instead I wanted to hear his reasoning and provide logical arguments to why that is incorrect.
I’m far from a soft secularist, but there is a time and a place for everything.
Becoming aggressive like some of their colleagues can be won’t help my arguments against religion. All it will do is to create more tension and hatred between us.
Many fellow atheists could learn from a few simple words written by Nietzsche:
“He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.”
