Sweden is a US feminist state

I honestly don’t know where to start picking this column apart. Most of you know I enjoy being provocative and shaking my fist at authority– especially as I see HST as an inspiration to my writing –but at least I try to do it factually without assumptions as Rundle does.

Not to mention the irony of this piece. Australians tend to become very vocal and defensive if a foreign country or organisation even tries to suggest what they should or should not do. But judging by this tosh it is fine for Australians to dictate foreign sovereign states as they see fit.

I will however try to sum it up briefly what is wrong with this column.

It is an extremely one-sided write-up which is laden with assumptions, conspiracies and propaganda. There is no evidence provided to any of the claims made by Rundle.

As one commentator puts it:
“As with Hicks, just because Assange is Australian doesn’t mean he’s automatically innocent or has governments conspiring unjustly against him. Sweden is not Iran or Bahrain (where an 11 year old boy that claims he was playing in the street was arested [sic] and is being charged with riot!), and has a legal system that practiced for centuries before Australia was even discovered. To rubbish it’s legal system, it’s government and its international standing suggesting it’s conspiring with the American in some underhand fashion I think is close to ridiculous.”

Which another adds:
“Also there is currently no evidence (even the greens said this today) that the US want to extradite him from Sweden or that they are preparing any charges against him.”

Which is why I only followed the Norwegian and Swedish media regarding the Utøya attack, because non-Scandinavian media was extremely inaccurate and more focused on sensationalising the whole incident.

Which is happening here with Assange.

Non-Scandinavians making wild accusations regarding Swedish law and government, bordering to nutjob conspiracy theories. While also completely ignoring the horrible PR Wikileaks is given due to this case and that suddenly Swedish law doesn’t apply to Assange for some magical reason.

What is certain is that even if USA tries to convince Sweden to extradite him– if he ever ends up in Sweden –they might just do it for show and even take a no for a no. Why? Because they have already succeeded in making Assange drag Wikileaks down in the mud with his legal circus – first running to UK away from Sweden and now seeking asylum at the embassy of Ecuador – which is conveniently closer to the US.

This whole kerfuffle has gone from being a poorly orchestrated drama to an even more poorly arranged comedy.

It’s about time this nonsense ends. Not for the sake of Assange, but for the sake of Wikileaks.
