Yesterday, it seemed, SE Queensland was caught by surprise. BOM was– which seems unusual –right this time. Some areas received over 200 mm of rain. One area was asked to evacuate. Streets got flooded. And the media beat up their own storm of fear. Evoking memories from last year’s floods.
Today they expected the weather to get even worse. BOM issued two ‘severe weather warnings’ which could result in local flash-floods. Even Wivenhoe Dam started releasing water – which they should’ve done last year. Lowering the capacity to 75%. Unlike last year’s 180%.
Mid-day the ‘severe weather warnings’ were cancelled.
Not sure if it’s BOM or the media that shoots a bit too often from the hip, but I can understand why some might get a bit annoyed. Yet it is difficult to ignore the fact that several areas were flooded during the rain. The risks were real. Brisbane is a large city. SE Queensland is an even bigger area. Just because I didn’t experience any flooding where we live doesn’t mean the threat isn’t real.
We had planned to visit some friends yesterday, but because of the uncertainty of the weather we’ll most likely stay at home.
At least I have enough whiskey for a week or so…
